Anki’s production is carried out in Kaavi, Finland. Kaavi is a village with approximately 3200 people living in an area of 790 km2. It is located rather far up north, only a few hundred kilometers from the arctic circle. This ”Arctic Weavery” has been weaving rugs since 1968.
All our materials are hand dyed using öko-tex 100 certified dyes. We use mainly unbleached natural materials, so the colours have a very soft but bright tone. This is why our colours work so well with interiors. All the materials are washed before the weaving, so there is minimal amount of chemical residue in them. Also, there are no chemicals added to the rugs during or after the weaving process.
Our looms might look old, but in skilled hands they are strong and reliable tools that produce the best possible quality.
We weave the rugs by hand using power looms. All our weavers are skilled professionals. They know how to make the edges straight and how to weave the wefts tight in order to get a high quality rug.
After weaving the rug is inspected and measured to make sure it is perfect. The rug surface is cleaned from all dust and yarn ends.
The warp ends are knotted to keep the rug tight and also to keep it from coming apart. Machine stitching is not durable enough for ANKIs rugs. Only handmade knotting is correct way to do the finishing.
Some customers prefer a fabric edging sewn over the knots. You can also select to have the warp yarns braided in to a decorative edging called ”Kaavilainen”.
