Sustainable design products always tell an interesting and exceptional story . In this article you can see, how 111 Coca Cola bottles reinvent a design classic:
Made out of 111 recycled PET-bottles, the 111 Navy Chair by EMECO is a true up-cycling product while fulfilling the highest demands on design.
Coca Cola and Emeco collaborated to solve an environmental problem: Up-cycling consumer waste into a sustainable, timeless, classic chair. Coca Cola first contacted Emeco in 2006 with the proposition that they create a Coca Cola version of the Navy chair. Their first reaction was that Coca Cola was looking for a promotional piece and they weren’t sure about participating. Coke reassured Emeco that they wanted to produce a useable lasting chair made of recycled PET Coke bottles.
With the help of Magnus Breitling and BASF, Emeco developed a formula and design that resulted in this chair. The 111 bottles constitute 65% of the chair´s total mass. The rest is made up of glass fibre and colorants. The glass fibres make sure that the finish is scratch resistant. Since 2010 over 10 million plastic bottles have been upcycled this way.
