Custom handmade rugs of highest quality have been ANKI’s passion since 1968. Founded in the small village of Kaavi in northeastern Finland, the company still takes pride in offering a sustainable alternative for our customers.
ANKI wants their customers to be able to enjoy the feel of unique custom-made quality at home. All rugs are made to order and tailored to the customers individual wishes. ANKI wants to be an inspiring choice for interior design and envinronmentally conscious living.
Quality & Materials
ANKI thinks, that the most environmental product is the one you don’t need to replace. Unique rugs are timeless pieces that last through generations. They believe in handmade quality and customer participation in the form of tailored designs.
The quality is based on pure natural materials, mostly pre-consumer recycled materials, classical design and weaving that has been done skillfully and carefully. Being natural is a higly appreciated value. They avoid using unnecessary chemicals and synthetic materials. This means for example that all rugs don’t have a plastic or rubber undercoating, but they can be used any side up. They are easily cleaned with just water and soap. Drycleaning is not necessary, it’s not even recommended.
The entire collection of traditional rugs are made in Finland by skilled artisans. This is the way ANKI can personally guarantee the high level of quality and ethical production.
The ANKI story
ANKI was founded in 1968 in the village of Kaavi by Eevi-Kirsi Järvelä and Anja Harju. For almost 50 years now, ANKI has marketed, designed and produced fine handwoven rugs both for domestic and the international market.
ANKI grew steadily and by 1972 it was the biggest employer of women in Kaavi. During this time there were over 18 women working in rug weaving and dyeing. At the peak times ANKI had 70 employees. The professional staff was then and is still today the key to ANKIs success.
In 1988 Peggy Björnberg bought the company and opened the first ANKI Shop in downtown Helsinki. Peggys vision was to manufacture and market the highest quality rugs possible. During the first five years she developed the colour system that is our biggest advantage even today. The ANKI colour system enables us to create almost any colour combination imaginable.
In addition to high quality, also close to Peggys heart has always been perfect customer service. We do our best to ensure that clients leave the Shop & Showroom happy. Peggys dedication has made ANKI the respected brand it is today.
In the 2000’s Peggy retired from business and Oscar Paul took over to head the company. After Oscar the company transferred to Peggys daughter Charlotta Björnberg-Paul. Under her guidance the ANKI brand is now being developed even further. The redesigned website, the new ANKI Rug Design Tool, and active social media participation remind the world that ANKI is a brand to remember.
